Most Harken winches are available In two different drum finishes: aluminium or chromed on bronze. An Aluminium drum can save 30% in weight and costs less, but won’t be as durable as one of chromed bronze. Aluminium drums are not suitable for winching wire rope. Cruisers are better off with winches that have chromed on bronze drums, although they will be approximately 5% higher in cost.
